1970 Challenger T/A & AAR Cuda Rocker Arms
Article & photos by Barry Washington

We all know that the AAR Cudas & Challenger T/As used adjustable rocker arms for the intake & exhaust valves as part of the 340 TA engine assemblies used with these A53 package cars.

The intake rockers were also offset to the left & right to allow the ports to be enlarged in size by racers even though the ports were the standard 340 / 360 size from the factory.

These rockers also share a similarity to cylinder heads in that the casting number is not the same as the part number;

Casting 072 is part number 3577 076 (RH intake rocker arm 4 required)

Casting 073 is part number 3577 077 (LH intake rocker arm 4 required)

Casting 074 is part number 3577 078 (exhaust rocker arm 8 required)

( Just to help with searches via search engines, I will take the spaces out of the part numbers above & list them as - 3577076 3577077 & 3577078 )

Our first photo shows the left hand rocker (LH) at left with the exhaust rocker in the center & the right hand (RH) rocker at right used on the 340 Sixpack & 340 Six Barrel engines;

Our second photo shows the casting numbers of 072, 073 & 074 in these rockers as you can see here;

Occasionally on various forums someone will be looking for TA rockers & someone will tell them they can use W2 or W5 race engine rocker arms with their heads. This is NOT TRUE.

Here is a side by side comparison photo of a TA rocker & a W2 / W5 cylinder head rocker so you can see the obvious difference in the offset for the adjuster screw due to the much wider intake ports in W2 & W5 heads;

You can see how that much more offset would be a problem!

The adjuster screws & lock nuts are exactly the same as were used on the factory 426 Hemi engines from the same era.

Thanks go out to Steve H. & Chet B. for their assistance in obtaining these rocker arms for this article & more!
