Is your 1970 Hamtramck car "numbers matching" and what does it really mean?
Article and photos by numbers geek Barry Washington

For a car to be "numbers matching", it means that ALL of the original serial numbered components are still with the car.

The numbers that should match on 1970 Hamtramck built cars are:
  • The dash VIN.
  • The Mylar VIN sticker on the back of the driver’s side door.
  • The fender tag VIN.
  • The engine VIN.
  • The transmission VIN.
  • The body VIN on the cowl. (E-bodies only)
  • The body VIN on the trunk lip. (A-bodies only - EXCEPT Duster, their rear body stamp is on the rear speaker shelf.)
  • The body VIN on the radiator support.

The photos are from a 1970 Valiant 4-door from the Hamtramck plant. (Yes, I do happen to like them.)

Lets start with the dash VIN, you can see that the VIN is VL41C0B219735.

Here is the door Mylar sticker, and once again you can see that the VIN is VL41C0B219735.

Here is the fender tag, and once again we see the VIN VL41C0B219735.

Here is the VIN on the block, you can see that they did not stamp the whole number on the engine and transmission, just the last eight digits, 0B 219735. (This is a slant six engine, so the VIN is on the block under the rear spark plug. For V8 engines look on the passenger side of the block down low near the front of the engine.)

Here is the VIN on the transmission.

For the body numbers, the year code and the plant code are transposed, these can be a little hard to see because of the paint at times, but these both read B0 217935.

If your 1970 Hamtramck built car’s numbers match in all these areas then it is considered "Numbers Matching". It can get better though! If you have any original paperwork for the car the VIN on the paperwork should also match.

Paperwork that may match includes:
  • Broadcast sheet(s)
  • Consumer information sheet.
  • Window sticker.
  • Warranty.
  • Other dealer paper work.

Any or all of these original items would add to the car's history and value if they match the car’s VIN.

Did you catch it? Did you see anything odd in the photos or article above? Pat yourself on the back if you did, this is a factory "error" car. Take a closer look if you missed it, see the body numbers? The two middle digits in the last six numbers are transposed. The factory did make mistakes. I have seen this on a 1971 318 Challenger from Hamtramck as well.
