AAR & T/A Interiors
(click on images for larger version)
(Updated 01/03/2009)

As with most things Mopar, exceptions can and do exist. The information below is a
general guideline of what is considered "correct" in the absence of a Broadcast Sheet.

Not all the pictures below are of AARs & T/As.
Some of the cars shown are not equipped correctly. Read the text for the correct info.

SEATS

The standard vinyl bucket seat interior was available in the colors shown below. Notice that the upholstery pattern was different for the AAR and the T/A. The seats, dash, carpeting, door panels, headliner, horn pad, and center console (if ordered) were all variations of the same color. The steering column was the same color as the dash for Rallye Instrument Cluster (option code A62) equipped cars and was Black if the car had the standard Instrument Cluster dash. I have heard that the Light Package (A01) also adds a steering column that matches the dash, but I have no documentation to back up that assertion.

White vinyl was available in combination with the colors listed below.
Seats, door panels and headliners were white while the dash, center console
(if ordered), carpeting, kick panels and horn pad were in the contrasting color.

Cloth & Vinyl Bucket Seats

T/As were optionally available with a cloth and vinyl interior in the following colors.
Carpeted lower door panels were included with the cloth & vinyl interior.

Some AARs may have come with a premium cloth & vinyl interior in Black (P5X9).
Initially a Gran Coupe only interior, a very small percentage of 'Cudas came with it too.

Both the AAR and the T/A were available with optional leather bucket seats.
Only the front buckets were leather. The rear seats were covered with vinyl.

AAR Leather Bucket Seats

The AAR was available with premium leather bucket seats from the Gran Coupe. They were available in these colors.

AARs with leather seats came standard with an Overhead Roof Consolette (C26). This consolette contained the following items: door ajar warning light and buzzer, low fuel light and seat belt warning lights. This option was unavailable on the T/A (though Challengers with the SE package came with it). It is coded on the fender tag.

T/A Leather Bucket Seats

Notice that the seat pattern of the T/A leather bucket seat mimics the cloth & vinyl interior seat pattern.
Only 3 colors were available. Carpeted lower door panels were included with leather seats too.

White vinyl was available in combination with the colors listed below. (Bright Blue and Dark Green were called just Blue and Green when combined with the white interior.) Based on the information above one would expect that white vinyl would also be offered in combination with Red (H6EW). However, the production bulletin that announced the new bench seat colors makes no mention of it. So I have to assume it was never offered.

TRANSMISSIONS

Let's shift gears (literally). Two transmission choices were available. The A833 HD 4-speed Manual (D21) and the A727 HD Torqueflite Automatic (D32). (By the way HD is for Heavy Duty. The lesser duty transmissions were not available.)

Each offered two ways to shift. For the manual transmission you got your choice of a Pistol Grip Shifter with a Center Console (C16) or without it. The automatic transmission was available either on the floor (the famous Slap Stik), which required the Center Console option (C16), or on the column. (The column shifter was available with either the bench or bucket seats.) If ordered, the Center Console option was coded on the fender tag.

STEERING WHEELS

Three different types of steering wheel were available. (They are not coded on the fender tag). The horn pad should match the dash color on all three types of wheel. Notice that there is a difference between the AAR & T/A horn pads on Rim Blow (S83) steering wheels.

INSTRUMENT PANELS

3 different instrument panels were available. Only the Rallye Instrument Cluster was coded on the fender tag.

The instrument panels pictured on the left were standard in both the AAR and the T/A. Each consisted of one large pod for the 120 mph speedometer, and to its right, four smaller pods containing the gauges for fuel, engine temp, alternator and, if ordered, a clock (otherwise it was blank). When the standard dash was ordered the steering column was black, to match the panel face, no matter what color the interior itself was.

The next picture shows the standard dash with the optional Woodgrain Instrument Panel applique (J64). This was an option on base and SE Challengers, and was standard equipment on Western Sport Special Challengers.  Until recently I had never seen this option on a T/A though I have not seen any documentation stating that one couldn't have been delivered with it. Luckily T/A owner Mark Kless was reading this page closely and notified me that his T/A is indeed a standard dash car with J64.  Thanks Mark! J64 is not listed as a stand-alone 'Cuda option (it was standard on the Gran Coupe) so I doubt that the AAR could have it. I have only seen one J64 equipped Challenger   that didn't have a black interior. It was Burnt Orange, and it was coded for a black steering column on the broadcst sheet. Notice also that it looks like an actual Gran Coupe dash was used instead of the normal Challenger one when this option was selected.

The last picture shows the optional Rallye Instrument Cluster. It is Option Code A62 and is the only one coded on the fender tag. It consisted of four large equal sized pods with (l-r) a 150 mph speedometer, 8,000 rpm tachometer, a pod containing four gauges including oil pressure, alternator, engine temperature and fuel, and a final pod for the clock. The steering column matched the interior on A62 cars and the Instrument Panel was equipped with a woodgrain applique, though not the same one as J64 obviously. The Rallye Instrument Cluster was the same in both the AAR and the T/A.

Note: When a car was equipped with the Rallye Instrument Cluster both A62 and N85 (tachometer) were coded on the fender tag.

How to Decode Your Interior.

The interior is denoted by a four position code on your fender tag.
The first position is for Trim Grade. H - High
P - Premium

The second position is for Trim Type. 4 - Vinyl Split Bench Seat
5 - Cloth & Vinyl Bucket Seats
6 - Vinyl Bucket Seats
R - Leather & Vinyl Bucket Seats

The third and forth positions denote the Trim Color.

(Just like the paint codes, these letters and numbers
mean something. Letters denote colors: B = Blue,
E = Red, F = Green, K = Orange, T = Tan,
W = White, and X = Black.
Numbers denote the shade within that color.
(The higher the number, the darker the shade.)
B5 - Blue or Bright Blue
E4 - Red
F8 - Green or Dark Green
K4 - Burnt Orange
T5 - Tan or Saddle Tan
X9 - Black
BW - Blue & White
EW - Red & White
FW - Green & White
XW - Black & White
